About Me

How WordSmith Came To Be

I’m Tavia Green Smith and I’ve been a writer at heart since I learned to write.

Many life transitions led me to want to be a writer who helps other people as they reach their next chapter in life.

I became a professional journalist after graduating from Western Kentucky University, in Bowling Green, KY with a Bachelor of Arts in print journalism.

My first job was at  Gannett Inc.’s newspaper, The Leaf-Chronicle, in Clarksville, Tenn. where I worked for eight years as a crime and courts reporter. During that time, I met many victims of violent crimes and  families who faced tragedies. Leading with compassion and not sensationalizing someone’s tragedy became my main focus as I built life-long relationships with those who’d lost someone they loved to gun violence, domestic homicide, and DUI wrecks.

In 2015, I began working at my “dream job.” I was hired on the Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s communications team, where I served as a spokeswoman for the hospital as well as public relations and media coordinator for Vanderbilt. My compassion led me to  work directly with high-profile patients and families who had been in car wrecks, fires, and other traumatic incidents. I served as a liaison between patients and the media.

I returned to my community in 2019, due to work/life balance and worked for ClarksvilleNow.com, as a managing editor and content specialist manager. I worked with community leaders to report current news events including daily COVID-19 coverage. I also worked with small business owners to write promoted content.

I have about 15 years of professional writing experience. I began writing obituaries after a family friend died of breast cancer 10 years ago and I’ve been honored to compose dozens of personalized obituaries that honor the memory of those who ‘lived’ and not just died.

I look forward to working with you as you transition into life’s next chapter in life. Whether it’s working through grief or getting a new job, I am here for you to grow through -and not just go through- your transitions.
